There are two major misconceptions about satellite TV. The first is that it is unreliable and disconnects every time there is rain or a bad storm. This is not true; in fact, it is actually more reliable than cable providers when it comes to the total number of outages. The other misconception is that while it offers more channels than cable, that it is somehow more limited in its options regarding DVR and on-demand features. However, satellite actually offers both of these special features just as local cable providers do.

DVR (Digital Video Recording) is a technology that allows for the digital recording of TV shows or movies onto a hard drive or similar medium. Unlike the VCRs of yesterday (which were complicated to program and inconvenient to use) these digital units allow much more freedom in recording all of your favorite shows. You simply choose what TV show you want to record with the click of a button. The system uses its "artificial intelligence" to record all the episodes of the show that air on a daily or weekly basis. You never have to worry about programming the system according to time schedules. You don't have to worry about buying new tapes or taping over other programs because of the position of the tape. Digital recording makes recording easy and fun.

Additionally, a DVR system allows you to rewind or pause movies and TV shows as they happen. You don't have to record a program before you manipulate these features; you can even pause or rewind live television! (Although how to invent a fast-forwarding feature for live TV remains a mystery) The DVR system is offered with satellite TV and is not an exclusive feature of cable.

The on-demand feature is similar to a DVR system, except that it does not require a special unit to record programs. Rather, it is a channel service that lets viewers immediately access TV series and movies whenever they want. Some of this on-demand content is in the category of Pay-Per-View movies, such as new releases or adult features. However, there are also other on-demand channels that allow you to select movies and TV series on-demand for free. Like the DVR system, you can use on-demand to rewind movies and TV series as they happen, without the need for pre-recording. A popular misconception is that only cable providers offer the on-demand feature, whereas satellite TV requires a DVR system in order to provide these subscriber-interactive options.

However, this is not true. In fact, it has dozens of on-demand channels to choose from, comparable and in some cases superior to that of cable. What kind of programming is available with on-demand channels? You can order lifestyle and educational channels like E!, The Food Network, TLC, The History Channel and the Animal Planet Network. You can also order your most popular basic cable networks like Comedy Central, Cartoon Network, MTV and Adult Swim. You can even find movie channels like Showtime, Starz and Encore ready to order on-demand for free. (Provided you already subscribe to these channels) There are many advantages to satellite TV and not many drawbacks-especially considering that it provides all the same features that cable companies may imply are exclusive to them.
